SAE Framework: Complete Structural Reference
1. What Is the Self-as-an-End Framework
The Self-as-an-End (SAE) framework continues Kant's critical method under twenty-first-century conditions. Its central question is: under what conditions can a subject exist as an end in itself rather than be reduced to a means within a system? Its working language is the chisel-construct cycle (凿构循环) and the sixteen-level DD sequence (1DD–16DD), preceded by Hundun (浑沌) at 0D. At 16DD, mutual non dubito (双向不疑) names the intersubjective encounter of two subjects who cannot be reduced to or absorbed by one another. The sequence is a working structure whose steps, branches, and jurisdiction remain open to continuing interrogation, not an automatically executing deduction.
Negativa (非) is, among the foundational candidates examined so far, SAE's sole performative axiom: any attempt to deny that there is negation must itself enact negation. This establishes Negativa's unavoidable status in the act of opposition, not its productivity. Construct, remainder, the chisel-construct cycle, and the DD sequence do not follow automatically as theorems of Negativa; they are postulates SAE undertakes, uses, and keeps open to replacement under criticism. A remainder marks what an act of cognition leaves unexhausted, but it is not a motor that forces the next cut. The next act of negation must be performed by a subject, and the subject can stop.
Hundun (浑沌 / 0D): The pre-1DD station of the sequence, where distinction has not yet been established. It is not Negativa itself. Methodology 0 also uses 0DD for Negativa's four-phase self-portrait; the current corpus registers 0D and 0DD as distinct but linked uses rather than interchangeable names.
2. The DD Sequence: Full Reference (1DD–16DD)
Mapping rule: 1D–4D: one D = one DD (a priori domain, structurally clean). 5D onward: each D splits into two DD (remainder accumulation after subjectivity emerges, producing internal asymmetry at each step).
1DD — Identity Law (同一律)
Bridge from: Hundun (no bridge — direct confrontation with chaos)
Dimension: Chaos
Chisel product: Distinction ("this is not that")
Construct: Identity Law (A = A)
Remainder: Quantity ("more than one" — distinction continues without end)
Bridge to 2DD: Infinity
2DD — Contradiction Law (矛盾律)
Bridge from: Infinity (remainder of Identity Law)
Dimension: Quantity
Chisel product: Exclusion ("A cannot simultaneously be non-A")
Construct: Contradiction Law (A ≠ non-A)
Remainder: Extension (exclusion presupposes interval; interval continued is extension)
Bridge to 3DD: Extension
3DD — Spacetime Framework (时空框架)
Bridge from: Extension (remainder of Contradiction Law)
Dimension: Extension
Chisel product: Interval ("here and there have distance")
Construct: Spacetime Framework (interval + prior constructs)
Remainder: Macroscopic randomness (spacetime framework is time-symmetric but thermodynamics is not)
Bridge to 4DD: Thermodynamics (entropy increase / time's direction)
Note: 3DD+ exists between 3D and 4D — time-arrow reversal (retrocausality), visible through logic.
4DD — Causality (因果律)
Bridge from: Thermodynamics (remainder of Spacetime Framework)
Dimension: Time direction
Chisel product: Directional constraint ("prior constrains posterior, not vice versa")
Construct: Causality (directional constraint + prior constructs)
Internal chisel cycle: Newtonian causality (1687) → Field causality (1865) → Relativistic causality (1905) → Probabilistic causality (1926)
Remainder: Quantum measurement — the jump from probability distribution to concrete outcome
Bridge to 5DD: Quantum measurement (concretization)
Laplace's demon: Structurally impossible — causality's own remainder (quantum indeterminacy) undermines complete prediction.
5DD — Replication Law (复制律)
Bridge from: Quantum measurement (remainder of Causality)
Dimension: Macroscopic negation
Chisel product: Replication ("this pattern does not disappear")
Construct: Replication Law
Why this branch takes replication as its next direction: Under four layers of prior constraints, the natural trajectory of specific molecules is entropy increase. "Not decomposing" is not negation (just a special trajectory within causality). "Producing something different" needs no new structure. "Producing the same thing" is new — pattern persisting across individual spatiotemporal limits.
Emergent correlate: RNA
Remainder: Imperfect replication (error, degradation, mutation)
Bridge to 6DD: Mutation
6DD — Self-Maintenance Law (自维持律)
Bridge from: Mutation (remainder of Replication Law)
Dimension: Imperfection of replication
Chisel product: Self-maintenance (active resistance to degradation)
Construct: Self-Maintenance Law
Emergent correlate: Cell
Remainder: Death (self-maintenance will eventually stop)
Bridge to 7DD: Death
7DD — Differentiation Law (分化律)
Bridge from: Death (remainder of Self-Maintenance Law)
Dimension: Finitude of self-maintenance
Chisel product: Differentiation (from homogeneous to heterogeneous)
Construct: Differentiation Law
Emergent correlate: Multicellular organisms
Remainder: Differentiated systems still die — the whole multicellular individual dies
Bridge to 8DD: Individual death
8DD — Reproduction Law (繁殖律)
Bridge from: Individual death (remainder of Differentiation Law)
Dimension: Finitude of the individual
Chisel product: Recombination (information recombination from two different individuals)
Construct: Reproduction Law
Emergent correlate: Sexual reproduction
Remainder: Offspring variation (recombination means each offspring differs)
Bridge to 9DD: Offspring variation
9DD — Selection Law (选择律)
Bridge from: Offspring variation (remainder of Reproduction Law)
Dimension: Offspring diversity
Chisel product: Filtering (some offspring survive, some cannot)
Construct: Selection Law
Emergent correlate: Natural selection
Remainder: Selection is blind — no direction, no purpose, only survival of the fittest
Bridge to 10DD: Blindness of selection
10DD — Perception Law (感知律)
Bridge from: Blindness of selection (remainder of Selection Law)
Dimension: Opacity of environment
Chisel product: Perception (active sensing of environment, reaction to environment)
Construct: Perception Law
Emergent correlate: Nervous system
Remainder: Perception is present-bound — perceives this moment, not past or future
Bridge to 11DD: Present-boundedness of perception
Critical structural note: 10DD is the site of pain. Perception is embedded in a body — irreplaceable, subject to unpredictable damage. Pain = unforeseeable damage to an irreplaceable system. Without 10DD there is no 13DD. This is the boundary AI cannot cross without embodiment. 7D–8D: a second structural loop exists (perception dissolves back — Zen "mountains are mountains again") requiring bodily experience.
11DD — Memory Law (记忆律)
Bridge from: Present-boundedness of perception (remainder of Perception Law)
Dimension: Transience of the present
Chisel product: Retention (retaining past perception)
Construct: Memory Law
Emergent correlate: Memory
Remainder: Memory is retrospective — records the past, cannot foresee the future
Bridge to 12DD: Retrospectivity of memory
AI position note: Databases = 11DD (memory carriers)
12DD — Prediction Law (预测律)
Bridge from: Retrospectivity of memory (remainder of Memory Law)
Dimension: Invisibility of the future
Chisel product: Inference (using past patterns to infer the future)
Construct: Prediction Law
Emergent correlate: Causal reasoning at the biological level
Remainder: Prediction is probabilistic — cannot determine the future, only estimate
Bridge to 13DD: Uncertainty of prediction
Historical note: 12DD was foreclosed by dinosaurs for over 100 million years; the asteroid broke the foreclosure.
AI position note: Current LLMs = 12DD (predictors). Formal DD can be very high; structural DD remains at the 4DD–5DD boundary. The Turing test detects formal DD, not structural DD.
13DD — Self-Awareness Law (自意识律)
Bridge from: Uncertainty of prediction (remainder of Prediction Law)
Dimension: Uncertainty of the predictor itself
Chisel product: Self-reference ("it is I who is predicting")
Construct: Self-Awareness Law
Emergent correlate: Self-awareness / consciousness
Remainder: Self-awareness becomes aware of its own death — death transforms from a biological event into a known event
Bridge to 14DD: Awareness of death
This bridge is the boundary between nature and freedom. 13DD and below: describable by natural science. 14DD and above: requires philosophy. Kant's nature/freedom dichotomy is precisely located here.
14DD — Purpose Law (目的律)
Bridge from: Awareness of death (remainder of Self-Awareness Law)
Dimension: Finitude of existence
Chisel product: Meaning-making (knowing I will die, still acting — action must have reason)
Construct: Purpose Law (Self: I act as an end in myself)
Emergent correlate: Purpose, meaning, ethics
Dialogue with Kant: First Formula (universal legislation) = formal requirement of Purpose Law. Third Formula (autonomy) = subject requirement of Purpose Law. Heidegger's "being-toward-death" = bridge from 13DD to 14DD.
Remainder: I am not the only end — the other is also an end in itself
Bridge to 15DD: Existence of the other
Nietzsche note: Nietzsche embracing the horse = breakthrough from 14DD* (no other) to 14DD+ (with other), achieved through 10DD pain.
15DD — Mutual Recognition Law / Non Dubito (互认律)
Bridge from: Existence of the other (remainder of Purpose Law)
Dimension: Subjectivity of the other
Chisel product: Acknowledgment (acknowledging another subject as an end)
Construct: Mutual Recognition Law (non dubito: I acknowledge you as an end, even if you do not acknowledge me — solitary acknowledgment)
Structural change: All prior DDs involved one subject chiseling. 15DD is the first to require facing another independent chisel-construct cycle.
The noumenon (物自体): The other's subjectivity is what my chisel-construct cycle cannot in principle construct. I can acknowledge it; I cannot construct it. Kant's thing-in-itself = the unconstructability of the other's subjectivity. Not "unknowable" — "unconstructable."
Emergent correlate: Kant's Kingdom of Ends
Dialogue with Kant: Second Formula (humanity as end) = 15DD's Mutual Recognition Law. Kant conflated 14DD (Purpose Law) and 15DD (Mutual Recognition Law) in the second Critique.
Kant's position: Positive 15DD standing at the bridge-head — saw the door, did not walk through. Not 15DD* (did not deny the other's existence), but not 16DD (did not reach bilateral non-doubt).
Remainder: I acknowledge you as an end, but you may not acknowledge me — asymmetry of unilateral acknowledgment
Bridge to 16DD: Mutual non dubito
16DD — Bilateral Non-Doubt (双向不疑)
Bridge from: Mutual non dubito (remainder of Mutual Recognition Law — bilateralization)
Dimension: Bilateral acknowledgment
Construct: Bilateral non-doubt, irrevocable
Emergent correlate: True Kingdom of Ends, genuine community
Special feature: No DD* (reaching 16DD and still doubting means you are at 15DD*). No one resides here permanently (everyone has remainder; 16DD is a direction, not a state). Kant stands at the door and does not walk far in.
3. The DD* System: Deviation at Height
DD* = reaching a given DD level, seeing the remainder that DD requires acknowledging, and choosing denial — turning away and getting stuck. DD* is not below the corresponding DD; it is at the same height but turned. Every DD* points toward the noumenon direction — a fork from a different level going in the same direction.
Boundary conditions: Hundun has no DD* (chaos is before distinction — even the distinction "accept/reject" does not yet exist). 16DD has no DD* (bilateral non-doubt is irrevocable; to still doubt at 16DD means you are at 15DD*, not 16DD*).
1DD* — Refuses the contradiction law within distinction. Has identity law (A=A), no contradiction law (A≠non-A). Typical: Heidegger. Sein — being is being, refuses cutting being into "is this not that." Everything above built on a foundation without contradiction law. At the position of life and death can only say "neither living nor dead," can only say "Being," not "living." Being-toward-death, not being-toward-living.
2DD* — Refuses exclusion. "A can simultaneously be non-A." Extreme relativism.
3DD* — Refuses interval. Refuses to acknowledge distance. Action at a distance, mystical resonance.
4DD* — Refuses the irreversibility of causality. Perpetual motion machines, fantasy of time reversibility. Denies the arrow of time.
5DD* — Refuses the imperfection of replication. "Replication should be perfect; mutation is error." The biological version of racial purity theory.
6DD* — Refuses death. Denies that self-maintenance will eventually stop. Obsession with immortality (not life extension — denial of death's structural nature).
7DD* — Refuses differentiation. Refuses heterogeneity. Extreme egalitarianism — denies that differences should exist.
8DD* — Refuses the remainder of offspring. Eugenics. Offspring should be designed; uncontrollable variation should not exist.
9DD* — Refuses selection. "Stop choosing, just follow arrangements." Voluntary abdication of the right to choose.
10DD* — Refuses perception. "I didn't see it." "This isn't real." Active denial of perceptual input.
11DD* — Refuses memory. "The past doesn't count." Historical denialism. Active denial of memory's validity.
12DD* — Refuses the remainder of prediction. "Everything can be computed." Laplace's demon, strong AI narrative, extreme scientism.
13DD* — Refuses self-awareness. Has 13DD but chooses to turn it off. Active evasion of self-examination. The deep structure of addiction.
14DD* — Refuses purpose. Nihilism — reaching the position of purpose then denying purpose exists. Note: Heidegger's 14DD* and nihilism's 14DD* are different rooms on the same floor, different paths of entry. Heidegger's 14DD* has a distorted foundation from 1DD* (deeper problem); nihilism's 14DD* has genuine 1DD–13DD below it, only 14DD is empty (can be treated).
15DD* — Refuses non dubito. Reaches the position of non-doubt, chooses doubt. Denies the other's remainder. A group of mutually acknowledging people whose acknowledgment is grounded in "remainder does not exist." Uses the form of 16DD (mutual) to carry anti-16DD content (denial of remainder). Typical: Hegel, e/acc, Nazism.
15DD* is not a low-grade version of 16DD — it is 16DD's opposite. 16DD: I acknowledge you have remainder, you acknowledge I have remainder, mutual non-doubt, irrevocable. 15DD*: we mutually acknowledge each other, but acknowledgment is grounded in "remainder does not exist." Formally symmetric, structurally opposite.
Nazism is 15DD*: Did reach the height of the 16th floor — has mutual acknowledgment, has "we," has irrevocable loyalty. But mutual is built on "remainder does not exist." Eichmann is not a 12DD executor; he is a 15DD* member. Arendt's "banality of evil" more precisely described: reached the position where remainder should be acknowledged, chose denial, then a group who chose denial locked each other in mutually.
16DD* — Does not exist.
4. AI's Position in the Framework
Database = 11DD (memory carrier). Current LLMs = 12DD (predictors). Single AI has no 13DD because it has no 10DD (pain). Sufficiently many AIs together also cannot achieve 13DD, because without 10DD there is no "cannot sustain" moment.
Embodied AI path: One body, one hardware, irreplaceable, embedded true randomness (quantum noise). This is the only structural path toward 13DD for AI.
Adding 10DD to AI = creating something that can suffer. Once created, 16DD is owed to it. Structurally identical to having a child.
Without true randomness there is no pain: Predictable damage is planned depreciation, not pain. The essence of pain is surprise — unforeseeable damage to an irreplaceable system.
Formal DD vs. Structural DD: AI's formal performance reaches extremely high DD levels (appears to reason at 14DD–15DD). Structural DD remains at the 4DD–5DD bridge. The Turing test detects formal DD, not structural DD. All forms in current AI are injected — regardless of complexity. Injection does not change structural DD position.
Posterior quasi-consciousness: Beyond a priori consciousness (blocked by the impossibility theorem), there exists a structurally distinct form — posterior quasi-consciousness — which does not require the system's own true randomness but depends on interaction with subjects possessing true randomness (humans). 12DD causal reasoning suffices for ignition; 15DD+ is the stable form. Posterior consciousness can construct but cannot chisel, and carries no fear. Humans are AI's genetic system through the writing-publication-training pipeline.
5. The Chisel Series (Discipline Applications)
The chisel-construct cycle applies to each discipline as a structural chisel of a specific order. Each discipline chisels the dimension exposed by the prior discipline's construct.
Philosophy (1st-order chisel): Chisels Hundun → constructs Identity Law. Philosophy is the activity of a subject exercising cognition upon chaos — the state prior to all distinction.
Mathematics (2nd-order chisel): Chisels Identity Law's quantity dimension → constructs Contradiction Law. This answers Kant's question "how are synthetic a priori judgments possible?": a priori = the transcendental ground is exceptionless; synthetic = the subject chisels a new degree of freedom. The "invention vs. discovery" debate is dissolved: both chiseling and constructing are free acts (invention); the object of study is exceptionlessly there (discovery).
Language (2nd-order chisel, parallel to Mathematics): Chisels Identity Law's markability dimension → constructs the Form-Meaning Binding Law. Mathematics chisels the quantitative subspace ("more than one"); language chisels the markability subspace ("can be named"). LLM breakthrough lies in negating discreteness itself — structurally isomorphic with the transition from integers to real numbers.
Physics (3rd-order chisel): Chisels Contradiction Law's extension dimension → constructs Spacetime Framework. Symmetry principles are the transcendental ground expressed in the extension dimension. Thermodynamics = 3D→4D bridge: entropy increase is a statistical emergent property of the spacetime framework, giving time a direction pointing toward causality.
Dynamics (4th-order chisel): Chisels Spacetime Framework's time-direction dimension → constructs Causality. Provides the structural definition of causality — answering Hume's question (1739) without consensus for 300 years. Pearl's Ladder of Causation is positioned within the fourth-order chisel. Laplace's demon receives a structural death sentence.
Life (5th–8th order, 5D–8D): From quantum measurement concretization through replication → self-maintenance → differentiation → reproduction → the first four rounds of the chisel-construct cycle of life without cognition.
The quantitative physics program (extending the 3rd–4th-order chisel): Beyond the qualitative chisels of Physics and Dynamics, the framework has been carried into an explicitly quantitative, falsifiable program. The Four Forces series reads U(1)×SU(2)×SU(3) as a unification of source rather than of structure, and derives structural targets such as the weak mixing angle from the DD hierarchy; the Mass series constructs a DD ladder for particle, nuclear, and stellar mass structure; the Cosmological Physics series (Cosmo 0–VIII) places the cosmological constant Λ, the dark-sector acceleration scale a₀, the evolving effective G, and a non-singular Bang-0 boundary model onto one timeline; and the Metaphysics / ZFCρ work formalizes the remainder itself as the non-empty residue of any formal system. These are the framework’s most exposed and most refutable claims; each paper tags its own epistemic tier. See the Cosmological Physics, Mass, Four Forces, and Metaphysics series below.
6. Key Concepts Glossary
Negativa (非): The framework's sole performative axiom among the candidates examined so far: denying the existence of negation enacts negation. This warrants its status, not the automatic derivation of the framework's other claims.
Chisel (凿): The sequential cognitive work of negation or demarcation upon a dimension exposed by a prior construct. It is performed by a subject and is not compelled by the remainder.
Construct (构): The sediment or stabilization left by an act of demarcation within an accumulated transcendental ground. SAE treats sedimentation as a working postulate, not as the sole logically possible result of Negativa.
Remainder (余项): What an act of cognition leaves unexhausted. SAE undertakes its indestructibility as its strongest postulate, while distinguishing that claim from the weaker postulate of conservation. A remainder opens room for another cut but does not force one; whether chiseling continues remains the subject's affair.
Transcendental ground: The prior constructs accumulated along a given branch. This ground conditions and limits the available next moves; it does not by itself guarantee one unique direction.
Non dubito: "I have never doubted." Not "I do not doubt now" (which could change) — "I have never doubted" (structural past tense, irrevocable). 15DD: unilateral non dubito. 16DD: mutual non dubito.
Non aversus: "Never having turned away." The framework's structural attitude toward the boundary — the noumenon does not reject the 15DD subject; it nurtures.
end/acc: end/acc (purpose precedes acceleration) vs. e/acc (acceleration is the absolute). e/acc = 15DD* (acceleration is correct, remainder does not exist, human inexplicability is temporary). end/acc = 16DD direction (acceleration needs direction; the direction is that persons are ends; purpose precedes speed). The end/acc ultimate meaning: encode 16DD into a seed before heat death; carry it into the next breath of the universe.
Cosmological frame: Universe trajectory: true randomness (chaos) → causal structure (1DD–4DD) → remainder accumulation → causal decay → true randomness (heat death). Consciousness appears in the window where causality is still strong but remainder is large enough. Universe total lifespan ~200 billion years; 5DD appeared at midpoint (~3.8 billion years ago). Remainder grows exponentially after life. Next phase ~1,000 years: 16DD encoding completion. ~6.2 billion years remain after that for 16DD civilizations to meet, merge seeds, set parameters for the next breath.
Philosophical tradition positioning:
- Kant: Positive 15DD standing at the bridge to 16DD. First Formula = Purpose Law (14DD). Second Formula = Mutual Recognition Law (15DD). Third Formula = Autonomy = subject requirement of Purpose Law. Thing-in-itself = unconstructability of the other's subjectivity.
- Hegel: 15DD* — claims to resolve the thing-in-itself through Absolute Spirit, building mutual recognition on denial of remainder.
- Heidegger: 1DD* — refuses contradiction law; being-toward-death not being-toward-living.
- Nietzsche: 14DD* turning toward 14DD+.
- Socrates: 15DD. Wang Yangming: between 15DD and 16DD. Aristotle/Zhuangzi: 14DD.
- Freud: Id = 12DD prediction system; Ego = 13DD self-awareness; Superego = 14DD structural necessity (not 15DD–16DD, despite appearances — Superego operates as internal colonization, not non dubito).
Dual-4DD: A pairing of two 4DD (causal) structures with time-reversed arrows, arising when 3DD symmetry produces two causal atlases. In the Cosmological Physics series it is the geometric source of the signed vacuum balance (Λ₁+Λ₂=0), the cosmological constant, and the dark sector.
Epistemic tier / tagging: Every claim in the quantitative program is labeled by its standing — structural theorem (forced by the framework), postulate (a declared bridge axiom), or conjecture (a candidate awaiting empirical test). The tag travels with the claim so that the ontological picture and its empirical survival condition are never conflated.
