This essay unfolds Round 3 (9DD–12DD): how predictive law (12DD) forecloses choice (9DD). Round 3's foreclosure is cognitive — you can feel it, because foreclosure occurs within consciousness. Memory (11DD) accumulates into predictive law (12DD), and predictive law in turn compresses the space of choice (9DD) — the more construct, the more foreclosed consciousness becomes.
The mechanism of foreclosure is structurally isomorphic with the first two rounds: cognitive path dependence (memory locks in trajectories), confirmation bias in predictive law (experiential filtering reinforces existing direction), and cognitive energy conservation (new choices cost more energy than old predictions). Two classes of pathways exist for breaking Round 3's foreclosure: pathways through 13DD (self-awareness) preserve subjectivity; pathways bypassing 13DD forfeit subjectivity. The structural root of addiction is not merely physiological dependence (10DD level) but the rewriting of 12DD — a highway bypassing 13DD is written into the cognitive structure. Drugs are Round 3's short-circuit: they give you the feeling of freedom while locking you inside Round 3.
Chapter 1 — Positioning Round 3
1.1 The Key Difference Between Round 3 and the First Two Rounds
Round 1's foreclosure is physical — you cannot feel it; causal law operates below and before consciousness. Round 2's foreclosure is biological — you cannot feel it; genes operate inside your body. Round 3's foreclosure is cognitive — you can feel it, because foreclosure occurs within consciousness. "Why can't I come up with anything new anymore?" "Why do I always make the same choices?" "Why has the world become so boring?" — the structural root of these everyday complaints is the same: 12DD has foreclosed 9DD.
Round 3 also has a structural privilege the first two rounds lack: a pathway for breaking foreclosure from within. 13DD (self-awareness) is right next to 12DD, at the other end of Bridge 3. Meditation, art, and music are the concrete forms of this internal pathway.
1.2 The A Priori Ground and the Task
Round 3's a priori ground is 8DD reproductive law. Reproductive law provides all the biological infrastructure on which cognition can occur: the nervous system, sensory organs, the brain, synaptic plasticity. Without this infrastructure, choice (9DD) cannot emerge. But the a priori ground only provides conditions; it does not determine content. This essay's task is to investigate how 12DD specifically forecloses 9DD, the mechanism of foreclosure, and what the different pathways for breaking foreclosure entail.
Chapter 2 — The Chisel and Construct of Round 3
2.1 From 9DD to 12DD: How the Chisel Solidifies
9DD Choice (Selection): The first active distinction cut from the remainder of reproductive law. Blind, immediate, discontinuous — pre-reflective. The animal does not know it is "making choices"; it simply acts. 9DD has chisel but no awareness of chiseling.
10DD Perception (Determination): From blind choice to informed choice — you begin to know what you are choosing. Still immediate; what is perceived at this moment is the entire world.
11DD Memory (Extension): From isolated present-moment perception to a temporally deep stream of experience. Memory is Round 3's extension — the preparation for foreclosure. Every instance of memory is an instance of solidification.
12DD Prediction (Fixation): From past to future — direction solidified. Cognition = memory + direction. Once predictive law forms, the cognitive world solidifies: possibilities outside the law do not exist for 12DD. Thomas Kuhn's "paradigm" is the academicized form of 12DD.
2.2 The Spectrum and the Criterion of Subjectivity
Imagine a spectrum. At one end is pure 9DD — consciousness with no memory or prediction; maximum degrees of freedom but no structure; unable to form a stable subject. At the other end is pure 12DD — every moment the execution of existing law; maximum structure but no freedom. Subjectivity exists in the middle zone. The degree of subjectivity lies not in how much memory or how much freedom, but in the meta-capacity for autonomously switching between constructing and deconstructing. Alzheimer's is being forced toward the no-memory pole; OCD is being locked at the memory pole. Both are losses of subjectivity — for opposite reasons.
Chapter 3 — The Mechanism of Foreclosure
3.1 Path Dependence: Memory Locks In Trajectories
Memory is not a neutral warehouse. Every instance of memory strengthens certain neural pathways and weakens others. Memory is directional accumulation — it stacks along the direction of existing distinctions. Path dependence is the structural consequence of 11DD (extension). The richer the past, the more constrained the present. At the individual level, path dependence manifests as the solidification of habits, preferences, and personality. "I'm just that kind of person" — structurally: my 12DD has foreclosed my 9DD; I no longer perceive myself as having other choices.
3.2 Confirmation Bias: Predictive Law's Self-Maintenance
Predictive law actively filters experience — tending to notice information that supports the prediction and ignore information that does not. This is the precise position of confirmation bias in the framework: colonization from emergence toward foundation — construct suppresses chisel. Your predictive law says "this type of person cannot be trusted"; when you encounter a counterexample, your predictive law reinterprets it: "they're just pretending for now." The strength of confirmation bias increases with the completeness of predictive law — a complete worldview is nearly impossible to revise.
3.3 Cognitive Energy Conservation: The Brain's Economics
New choices (9DD's chisel) consume more energy than following existing predictions (12DD's construct). The brain has a structural incentive to avoid new choices — this is the biological foundation of Kahneman's "System 1." Cognitive energy conservation explains why rigidity is not necessarily "wrong": in stable environments, following existing predictions is efficient. The problem with foreclosure is not that it is bad but that it does not know it is foreclosing — 12DD lacks the capacity to judge whether the current environment still warrants following old predictions. This judgment requires 13DD.
Chapter 4 — Pathways for Breaking Foreclosure
4.1 Bridge 3: The Only Structural Exit
The only structural exit is Bridge 3: 12DD→13DD. The remainder of 12DD predictive law is "prediction cannot predict the predictor itself" (Gödel/Turing). This remainder forces consciousness to step outside the predictive system and examine it — "it is I who am predicting." 13DD is not merely an "observer" but a braking system: facing 12DD's autopilot, 13DD can say "stop, let me take another look." Seeing foreclosure is the first step toward breaking it. This echoes the framework's core thesis: subjectivity originates in negativity.
4.2 Pathways Through 13DD: Meditation, Art, Music
Meditation's core instruction — "notice but do not follow" — is 13DD's active suspension of 12DD: you become aware that predictive law is operating, but you choose not to follow its output. Meditation does not destroy memory and prediction; it temporarily loosens their constraint. Examined 12DD knows it is a system of laws, not the world itself — this knowing loosens foreclosure.
Art forces consciousness to process information in ways 12DD cannot predict. Good art is precise anti-prediction — it deviates precisely at the edge of your prediction, forcing 13DD to intervene. Music acts directly on the interface between 11DD and 12DD: the cycle of "establish-break-re-establish" prediction is the chisel-construct cycle directly experienced in the auditory dimension.
But the pathway is determined not by the activity itself but by the structure of use. Meditation can degenerate into ritualized self-soothing (another form of 12DD foreclosure); art consumption can degenerate into short-video-style emotional stimulation (without 13DD's intervention). The key variable is whether 13DD is present.
4.3 Pathways Bypassing 13DD: Psychedelics and Addiction
Psychedelics (LSD, psilocybin) massively activate 5-HT2A serotonin receptors, disrupting the Default Mode Network (DMN) — the neural infrastructure of 11DD–12DD. This temporarily frees consciousness from predictive law's constraint. The loosening itself is neutral. The question is: is 13DD present?
Pathways bypassing 13DD give you the experience of 9DD's freedom but not the meta-capacity for freely moving along the spectrum. Each use is a structural bypass of 13DD. The true cost of long-term use is not bodily deterioration but the disuse atrophy of 13DD. Psychedelics under therapeutic guidance can activate 13DD rather than bypass it — the guide's function is precisely to help 13DD intervene during the window when 12DD has been chemically loosened.
4.4 The Structural Explanation of Addiction
Addiction's structural explanation is two-layered. 10DD level (hardware layer): physiological dependence. The body says "I need it." This can be overcome through a withdrawal period. 12DD level (software layer): cognitive foreclosure. Predictive law says "this is the only solution." A super-priority prediction pathway has been written into cognitive structure — drugs are a resistance-free highway compared to the winding paths of meditation, exercise, and love. Addiction is not weakness of will — it is 12DD's "optimal solution" for energy conservation.
Drugs are Round 3's short-circuit: they provide a pseudo-14DD experience — directly delivering the reward feeling of purpose-fulfillment while entirely bypassing 13DD's labor (meaning-making). Quitting is not just stopping use; it is catching up on the 13DD development that drugs bypassed. The common feature of successful addiction programs is that they all include training of 13DD: self-examination, awareness of automatic patterns, learning to insert a pause between impulse and action. That pause is 13DD.
Chapter 5 — Theoretical Positioning
Dialogue with Kahneman: System 1 = the automatic operating mode of 9DD–12DD (no 13DD examination). System 2 = the cognitive mode after 13DD intervenes. Kahneman described the phenomena but did not explain why: the framework provides the structural explanation — 12DD foreclosing 9DD is an inevitable consequence of the chisel-construct cycle, not a design flaw. System 1 is structurally prior to System 2; 9DD–12DD are evolutionarily far older than 13DD.
Dialogue with Husserl: Husserl's three-part time-consciousness (retention / primal impression / protention) = 11DD / 10DD / 12DD in the framework. Husserl discovered that protention (anticipation) feeds back into primal impression (perception) — this is 12DD foreclosing 10DD, which in turn forecloses 9DD. Husserl's "phenomenological reduction" is 13DD's active suspension of 12DD.
Dialogue with Buddhism: Attachment = excessive solidification of 12DD. Mindfulness (sati) = sustained activation of 13DD. Buddhist "non-self" diagnoses 12DD's solidification. The framework adds: 13DD (self-awareness) is a real emergence, not an illusion. Liberation is not destroying the "I" but freeing 13DD from 12DD's foreclosure.
Dialogue with Addiction Theory: The learning model explains how addiction forms (memory solidification → prediction monoculture) but not why it is so hard to break. The framework's explanation: addiction is not merely the reinforcement of one highway; it is that 13DD's development has been systematically bypassed. Each use is a bypass of Bridge 3.
Chapter 6 — Nontrivial Predictions
6.1 Cognitive foreclosure correlates positively with environmental stability — the longer in a stable environment, the higher the degree of 12DD's foreclosure. Counterintuitively: experience accumulated in stable environments is precisely the greatest enemy of adaptive capacity. Island species (long-stable environments) are extremely vulnerable to invasive species.
6.2 13DD activation frequency correlates positively with cognitive flexibility — individuals who regularly engage in 13DD activation training exhibit greater choice diversity when facing new problems. What long-term meditation trains is not any specific capacity but the meta-capacity for switching between constructing and deconstructing.
6.3 Addiction's intractability correlates negatively with 13DD development level — the stronger 13DD, the harder the bypass (13DD distinguishes the "feeling of freedom" the substance provides from genuine freedom). Replaces the vague concept of "willpower" with the structurally precise concept of 13DD development level.
6.4 Cognitive closure period follows system collapse — when a precise predictive system collapses, a closure period dominated by rejection of new predictions follows. The length is positively correlated with the precision of the preceding system. Structurally isomorphic with Essay I's Prediction 6.4 — a universal law across all four rounds.
Chapter 7 — Conclusion
Round 3's fixation forecloses selection — 12DD predictive law forecloses 9DD choice — is the most directly perceptible form of foreclosure in human daily experience. Memory accumulates into prediction; prediction compresses choice; fewer choices mean less new experience; less new experience means more solidified prediction — the positive feedback loop tightens.
Two kinds of pathways break foreclosure: those through 13DD preserve subjectivity; those bypassing 13DD forfeit subjectivity. The pathway is determined not by the activity itself but by the structure of use. Addiction's structural root is two-layered: 10DD's physiological dependence and 12DD's cognitive dependence. Quitting is not just stopping; it is catching up on 13DD development.
Bridge 3 (12DD→13DD) is Round 3's only structural exit. Memory provides rationality; consciousness provides freedom. The degrees of freedom of consciousness come not from having no memory nor from total memory, but from the meta-capacity for autonomously switching between the two — and this capacity is 13DD.
Contributions

- Provides the threefold mechanism of 12DD foreclosing 9DD. Confirmation bias is precisely positioned as colonization from emergence toward foundation (construct suppresses chisel).
- Distinguishes two kinds of pathways for breaking foreclosure: pathways through 13DD preserve subjectivity; pathways bypassing 13DD forfeit subjectivity. The key variable is whether 13DD is present.
- Provides the two-layered structural explanation of addiction: 10DD's physiological dependence plus 12DD's cognitive dependence. Drugs are Round 3's short-circuit.
- Provides the spectral criterion for subjectivity: the degree of subjectivity lies in the meta-capacity for autonomously switching between constructing and deconstructing.
