Paper 4 (限, Limit) is the fourth paper of the SAE Power Theory series, belonging to the same one-way dependent conceptual system as the Prequel and Papers 1 (origin), 2 (morphology), and 3 (recognition). It introduces no new theorem and re-establishes none of P1's propositions; it unfolds, along the dimension of remainder, the complete dynamics of T3 (the power-remainder theorem, P1 §8) within the domain of power.
The central claim of P4 is this: the remainder is the structural limit of power. Any power structure, however complete, meets its structural limit at ρ ≠ ∅; and this limit is not peculiar to the side of the one over whom power is exercised. It is ineliminable at every node of the power relation. The one over whom power is exercised carries a remainder; the one who exercises power carries a remainder; the 14DD apparatus that bears the power, qua construct, also carries a remainder. There is no remainder-exempt position.
P4 establishes four criteria. L1 (ontological absoluteness of the remainder) defines the remainder as the ontological-layer topological differential between a 13DD subject's unbounded DD-possibility and the finite option grid it occupies, symmetric across any subject in the relation and independent of subjective awareness. L2 (the three states of the remainder) partitions the remainder's expression, by amplitude, into the latent, manifest, and boundary-crossing states. L3 (monotonic irreversibility of remainder accumulation) gives the law that the remainder cannot be zeroed and cannot be losslessly absorbed by power. L4 (the ontological cut between remainder and back-binding) separates the remainder (T3), borne by both subjects, from back-binding (T6), borne by the one who exercises power, and assigns the apparatus's constructive-layer remainder to the remainder family rather than to back-binding.
The remainder is value-free, and its modes of expression are unbounded. What this paper gives are the invariants that run across every mode of expression, not a catalogue of those modes; the three states are a structural frame, not a taxonomy. The discrimination between severing-mode and cultivating-mode is given not here but by whether the T6 locking action is triggered; its complete dynamics are left to P5 (Cultivating) and P6 (Severing), and resistance and dissolution to P7 (Dissolution).

§I Introduction: The Remainder as Limit
Power theory is the dual series to the SAE Moral Law theory. The Moral Law proceeds from the inside outward, treating cases where DD-positions are symmetric or mutually sustaining; power theory proceeds from the outside inward, treating cases where DD-positions are asymmetric and not mutually sustaining. The Prequel cleared the referential space of power; P1 established the 13DD point of origin and the three sources, made the power–rights duality explicit, and foreshadowed the closure of the three theorems of remainder, duality, and back-binding. P2 unfolded the geometric, phase, and dimensional axes of power along the dimension of morphology, and treated the topological legitimacy of the apparatus as a 14DD narrative-bearer. P3 separated the registers of recognition and unfolded the state-machine dynamics of operational recognition. The task of P4 is, on this foundation, singular and definite: to unfold, along T3 (the power-remainder theorem, P1 §8), the complete dynamics of the remainder within the domain of power.
P4 introduces no new T-theorem. T3 was established in P1; P4 unfolds it, depending one-way on P1, P2, and P3, and does not in turn define the prior papers. P1 §9 already named P4 as the full unfolding of the remainder's application in the domain of power; P2 §IX.3 handed P4 the dynamics of the remainder across the various forms; P3 handed P4 the T3 remainder produced by each operational-recognition operation. This paper makes good on these three.
The central claim, in one sentence: the remainder is the structural limit of power. Any power structure, however complete, meets its structural limit at ρ ≠ ∅. This limit comes not from an external constraint, nor from the psychological discontent of the one over whom power is exercised, nor from moral sanction; it comes from the ineliminable remainder at every node internal to the power relation.
This limit is global, not peculiar to one side. The one over whom power is exercised, call him B, carries a remainder; the one who exercises it, call him A, carries a remainder; the 14DD apparatus that bears the power, qua construct, also carries a remainder. There is no remainder-exempt position, and the party that declares itself the holder of power is no exception. Power can neither fully capture the object on which it acts, nor reduce its own agent to a pure instrument, nor bring the apparatus that bears it to a remainderless closure.
The side of this claim that concerns the one over whom power is exercised is the depth, on that side, of T5 (the power–rights duality theorem); it is not a re-establishment of T5. T5 says that the constitution of power requires that B's subject-position be retained, and that stripping it to the limit makes power withdraw. P4 then says: the subject-position so retained necessarily carries an undigestible remainder. T5 gives the condition for power's constitution; P4 gives the structural consequence of that condition; the two stand apart. The remainders on the side of the one who exercises power and on the side of the apparatus do not run along T5 but along the generality of Via Rho, namely that any 13DD subject and any construct have ρ ≠ ∅; this already surfaced in P1 §8's T6, in the words that the deeper the locking, the more A's own subject-remainder is compressed. P4 makes this global distribution explicit; it remains an unfolding of T3, not a new establishment.
Two clarifications about the remainder itself come first.
First, the remainder is value-free. The remainder is neither good nor bad; the remainder is merely ineliminable. It does not stand opposed to power, is not the resource of the one over whom power is exercised, is not the kindling of resistance, is not a vessel of free will, and is not power's adversary. It is only the appearance, in the domain of power, of the structural fact ρ ≠ ∅, the ontological obverse of the subject-position on which power operates. Being ineliminable is not the same as exerting force in any direction, and carries no value orientation. The three states introduced below are therefore not a value progression: the latent state is not more oppressed than the manifest, the boundary-crossing state is not freer than the latent, resistance is not preferable to drift. The three states are intervals of expressive amplitude, not a moral ladder.
Second, the modes of the remainder's expression are unbounded, and this paper does not enumerate them. In a power relation the remainder can unfold in unboundedly many ways. What this paper gives are the invariants that run across every mode of expression, namely where the remainder comes from (L1), how it accumulates (L3), and how it is cut from back-binding (L4); it does not give a catalogue of modes. The three states used below to organize the discussion are a structural frame cut by expressive amplitude, not a taxonomy; the six phenomena gathered under the three states are illustrative anchors named by T3 in P1, not an exhaustive list. This discipline shares a root with P2 §I's confinement of morphology to the mechanical-topological sense rather than the biological-taxonomic sense, and runs in the same direction as P3 R2's minimal generating set rather than an exhaustive list.
A further boundary must be drawn to keep this paper from over-generalizing. Via Rho says that any construct has ρ ≠ ∅; this is SAE's general remainder discipline. This paper does not restate that general remainder theory; it treats only how the remainder becomes a limit within an already-registered power relation, that is, how the side of the one over whom power is exercised, the side of the one who exercises it, and the side of the apparatus each make power unable to become total. This paper is the dedicated unfolding of T3 in the domain of power; it does not overlap with Methodology 00.
One last guard, placed up front. This series does not predict, does not encourage, and does not evaluate any specific political event. The three states of the remainder below are a mechanical description at the structural level, not a prescription for action and not a prediction of events. The words resistance, backlash, escape, and migration refer in this paper only to the structural forms of remainder-expression, not to any specific historical event or call to action.
Proposition Preview
This paper establishes four criteria, unfolded along T3, introducing no new T. A one-sentence preview of each follows; the complete statements are distributed across §II and §III.
L1, ontological absoluteness of the remainder. The remainder is the ontological-layer topological differential between a 13DD subject's unbounded DD-possibility and the finite option grid it occupies; ρ ≠ ∅ holds universally, symmetric across any subject in the relation, and independent of subjective awareness. Full statement in §II.
L2, the three states of the remainder. By its amplitude relative to a structure's absorption threshold and grid boundary, the remainder's expression takes the latent, manifest, and boundary-crossing states; the three states are a structural frame of expressive amplitude, not an enumeration of phenomena. Full statement in §III.
L3, monotonic irreversibility of remainder accumulation. Every power operation leaves behind, reshapes, or redistributes a remainder that cannot be losslessly absorbed; the monotonicity is not that magnitude only increases, but that the remainder cannot be zeroed and cannot be losslessly absorbed by power. Full statement in §III.
L4, the ontological cut between remainder and back-binding. The remainder (T3) is the undigestible residue of both subjects in the relation and of any construct; back-binding (T6) is the self-binding of the one who exercises power, arising from the locking action. Full statement in §II.
These four, together with the conceptual machinery already established in P1, P2, and P3, constitute the whole of this paper's tools. This paper establishes no new tool.
§II The Ontological Placement of the Remainder
Before tracing how the remainder unfolds, the remainder must be placed at the ontological layer. What the remainder is, and why it is ontologically absolute, is given by L1; how the remainder is cut from back-binding, and where the apparatus's constructive-layer remainder belongs, is given by L4.
> Criterion L1, ontological absoluteness of the remainder. The remainder (ρ) is the ontological-layer topological differential between a 13DD subject's unbounded DD-possibility and the finite option grid it occupies; ρ ≠ ∅ holds universally. This criterion is symmetric across any 13DD subject in the relation: B, the one over whom power is exercised, is confined by the grid A draws; A, the one who exercises power, is confined by the finite grid of exercise the structure affords (the finite action-set A can invoke); each side has an irreducible remainder. This differential does not depend on whether the subject is subjectively aware of it, does not depend on whether it produces discomfort, and does not depend on whether the subject is prepared to resist or to alter anything.
L1 invokes the ρ ≠ ∅ of Methodology 00 Via Rho directly and brings it down into the power relation. A 13DD subject's possibility is unbounded, while what any power structure can give it is a finite option grid. Between the unbounded possibility and the finite grid there is always a topological differential. That differential is the remainder. However dense the grid, it cannot be dense to the point of being equinumerous with unbounded possibility; hence ρ cannot be empty.
This criterion is symmetric across both sides of the relation. The remainder is not the privilege of the one over whom power is exercised. B is confined by the grid A draws, and B's unbounded possibility overflows that grid: this is B's remainder. But A is likewise a 13DD subject, and A's exercise can occur only through the finite grid of exercise the structure affords (the finite action-set A can invoke); A's unbounded possibility overflows that grid of exercise just as well: this is A's remainder. The remainder is distributed symmetrically across both sides of the relation, favoring neither (the unfolding of the side of the one who exercises power, and of the apparatus, is given in §VII).
The remainder is at the ontological layer, not the psychological layer. The remainder is not pent-up grievance, not a suppressed impulse, not the consciousness of resistance. It is a topological differential at the ontological layer; it does not depend on whether the subject is subjectively aware of it, does not depend on whether it produces discomfort in the subject, and does not depend on whether the subject is prepared to resist or to alter anything. Even where the one over whom power is exercised is subjectively in perfect compliance, without friction, this topological differential still exists (the perfect-compliance state under algorithmic power in §VIII proves this positively). The same holds on the side of the one who exercises power: A's remainder is not some psychological impulse of A's; A's off-script exercise is not an impulse, A's staying-the-hand is not mercy; they are the structural expression of A's possibility overflowing the grid of exercise. The remainder can leak through observable low-amplitude behavior; P3 §V.4's figure of people who, under repression, dare exchange only glances on the road is its standard form: the signal in averted eyes and posture is a leak at the behavioral layer, not some suppressed psychology.
> Criterion L4, the ontological cut between remainder and back-binding. The remainder (T3) is the undigestible residue of any 13DD subject in the relation (both B and A) and of any 14DD construct; ρ ≠ ∅ holds universally and is not confined to moments of locking. Back-binding (T6) is the self-binding on A's side that arises from the locking action, namely the compression of A's subject-remainder under locking (P1 §8); it accumulates only when locking is triggered. A's remainder (always present, present even without locking) and A's back-binding (present only with locking) stand apart: back-binding is the compression that locking performs on A's remainder, not A's remainder itself.
L4 cuts apart two things easily fused: remainder and back-binding. P1 §8's T6 says that the deeper the locking, the more A's subject-remainder is compressed. That sentence contains both remainder and compression, and if they are not separated, T3 (the remainder, ever-present) and T6 (back-binding, only under locking) get read as one thing. L4 locates their relation precisely: the remainder is the object, back-binding is an operation on that object.
The remainder (T3) is the undigestible residue on the side of the one over whom power is exercised, on the side of the one who exercises it, and of any construct; ρ ≠ ∅ holds universally and is not confined to moments of locking. It is ever-present, whether or not power performs locking. Back-binding (T6) is a specific dynamic on A's side alone: when A performs a downward locking on B, that is, tries to fix B's DD-position downward, A must continuously invest DD operational space to maintain that structure, A's own subject-remainder is thereby compressed, and A is back-bound by the structure A has locked. Back-binding accumulates only when the locking action is triggered. Hence A's remainder (ever-present, present even without locking) and A's back-binding (present only with locking) are two things: back-binding is the compression that locking performs on A's remainder, not A's remainder itself. When A does not lock, A's remainder freely unfolds as off-script exercise, modification, staying-the-hand, and so on; when A locks, this portion of A's remainder is compressed, A is bound into the structure A has locked, and at the limit A is locked into that structure together with the one over whom power is exercised.
The remainder on the side of the apparatus is of a different nature from that of the two subjects. The 14DD apparatus has no subject-remainder ρ; by SAE ontology, the apparatus is not a 13DD subject and has no field of self-consciousness (P2 §V.1). But the apparatus, qua construct, by Via Rho's principle that any construct produces a remainder, still produces its own constructive-layer remainder (mediator cost). This constructive-layer remainder belongs to the T3 remainder family and is heterogeneous with T6 back-binding. It must be stressed that the constructive-layer remainder is not a subject-remainder; it is not the apparatus feeling something, nor the apparatus wanting something; it is the interface failures, the rising complexity, the maintenance costs, and the brittleness-deposition the construct produces in maintaining its own closure. The apparatus must not be personified.
From this a key question can be handled: where does back-binding land for a locking applied through an apparatus? It lands on the set of 13DD key nodes that invoke the apparatus and perform the downward locking; it does not land on the apparatus. The apparatus has no ρ and cannot bear back-binding. Back-binding does not require a single final administrator to bear it; it is distributively anchored on every 13DD subject who invokes the apparatus and performs the core locking action on B: the engineer who writes the code, the manager who signs the order, each bearing in his own 13DD field one full share of T6, with back-binding not diluted across headcount (P2 §V.5, non-dilutability). The machine produces only physical wear (constructive-layer brittleness); living persons bear the topological back-binding. An apparatus grown so large that no 13DD subject any longer invokes or administers it, a fully headless apparatus, is by M2 no longer social power; it withdraws into an 11DD or 12DD physical phenomenon. The invariant is this: back-binding is always on a 13DD subject, and the apparatus never bears back-binding. The complete dynamics of the apparatus-layer remainder are not unfolded in this paper; they are left to P7 (Dissolution), the division of labor having been set in P2 §V.5. This section only establishes the peg for it, confirming that it belongs to the T3 family and is heterogeneous with back-binding.
§III The Expressive Structure of the Remainder: The Three States and Accumulation
After the remainder is placed at the ontological layer, the question is how it expresses. This section establishes L2 and L3: L2 gives the three-state frame of the remainder's expression, L3 gives the law of its accumulation.
The three states are derived from two features of any containing structure. Any structure that contains a subject has two features. The first is the absorption threshold: how much remainder the structure can absorb before the expression manifests. Every structure has some give and can absorb low-amplitude leakage up to a certain amplitude without letting that leakage cross out of containment into the open. The second is the boundary: the edge of the option grid, the outer extent of the range of displacement the structure permits.
These two features define the three states. If the remainder's expression is below the threshold and within the boundary, it is latent; if it crosses the threshold but remains within the boundary, it is manifest; if it crosses the boundary, it is boundary-crossing. Whichever state the remainder is in, its anchor is always the same ontological ρ.
The containing structure has one of itself for each node of the relation: the containing structure of the one over whom power is exercised is the grid A draws; the containing structure of the one who exercises power is the finite grid of exercise the structure affords; the containing structure of the apparatus is its own finite form. The three states are therefore node-neutral, applying equally to the side of the one over whom power is exercised, the side of the one who exercises it, and the side of the apparatus.
> Criterion L2, the three states of the remainder. By the amplitude of its expression relative to the absorption threshold and grid boundary of the structure the node occupies, the remainder of any node takes three expressive states: latent (sub-threshold and within the grid), manifest (over-threshold and within the grid), and boundary-crossing (across the grid boundary). The three states exhaustively cover the amplitude space; but within each state the remainder's concrete modes of expression are unbounded.
L2 contains two layers. First, the three states as amplitude intervals exhaustively cover the expression space: any single remainder-expression is either sub-threshold within the boundary, or over-threshold within the boundary, or across the boundary; there is no fourth landing point. Second, within each state the remainder's concrete modes of expression are unbounded and not enumerated here. The frame partitions landing points of amplitude, not kinds of expression; the three states are a mechanical-topological structural frame, not a biological-taxonomic species table.
The object that lands in one and only one state is a single remainder-expression, not the whole subject, the whole apparatus, or the whole relation. A single node can bear several remainder-expressions at once, each in a different state: some still latent, some already turned manifest, some already across the boundary. The three states characterize the landing point of a single remainder-expression, not the single overall state of a subject at a given moment.
By landing point, the six phenomena named by T3 in P1 each take their place as illustrative anchors. The latent state gathers drift and misreading, the manifest state gathers resistance and backlash, the boundary-crossing state gathers escape and migration. These six are anchors that show the frame holds, not an enumeration of modes of remainder-expression; their concrete mechanics are unfolded in §IV through §VII.
> Criterion L3, monotonic irreversibility of remainder accumulation. Every power operation (including the four operations of operational recognition in P3: producing, maintaining, steering, revoking) leaves behind, reshapes, or redistributes a remainder that cannot be losslessly absorbed. This monotonic irreversibility is not that magnitude only increases, but that the remainder cannot be zeroed and cannot be losslessly absorbed by the power structure (P3's non-Markovian machine: revocation is not a true undo); a local expression may decay, transfer, or reshape, and may even be taken up by cultivation into a new relational structure, but the total remainder does not vanish because power succeeded.
L3 attaches to P3's state-machine ontology. P3 established that every operation of operational recognition (producing, maintaining, steering, revoking) produces a T3 remainder, and that this state machine is a non-Markovian machine carrying irreversible friction: revocation is not a true undo, the broken mirror cannot be rejoined. L3 takes this up into the law of remainder accumulation.
Monotonic irreversibility means this: the remainder cannot be zeroed and cannot be losslessly absorbed by the power structure. It does not mean that the magnitude of each concrete remainder-expression only increases and never decreases. Both in fact and in structure there will be local leakage, transfer, recoding, and even uptake by cultivation into a new relational structure; some concrete expression may perfectly well decay, transfer, or reshape. What is monotonic is that the total remainder does not vanish because power succeeded, not the magnitude of each local expression. In this form L3 is consistent with Via Rho's remainder discipline.
One direct consequence of accumulation is a change of state: latent low-amplitude leakage accumulates and, once it crosses the threshold, turns into the manifest or boundary-crossing state. This accumulation is the remainder-side engine of the decay phase M4 (P2 §IV.4). M4 is driven jointly by the three factors of T3 (the remainder's ineliminability), T5 (the thinning of the seam), and the pressure of dominant-layer migration; the concrete dynamics of the ineliminability factor are precisely here. This paper takes up the remainder side of M4; the other two factors are not re-unfolded here.
The modal calibration that follows holds throughout. That the remainder is ineliminable and that accumulation is monotonic are structural necessities; when the remainder crosses the threshold, and when it changes state, are empirically contingent. The register is consistent with P1 §7: whether migration occurs is settled by structure, when migration occurs is settled by many factors. The existence of the remainder does not entail the necessary occurrence of any specific outcome.
The case of cultivation's success must, here, hold L1 to the end. When a cultivating power succeeds, the positional difference is dissolved and the relation comes apart; a natural question follows: does the remainder vanish along with it, and does L1's absoluteness thereby collapse? It does not. Cultivation's dissolution does not constitute a zeroing of the remainder; it only dissolves one particular power grid, so that the remainder in that relation no longer expresses in confined form, while the subject's absolute ontological ρ, qua 13DD subject, persists undiminished. The full distinction, between the local relational grid and the absolute ontological ρ, is given in §IX.
§IV The Latent-State Remainder: Drift and Misreading
The latent state is the remainder's expression below the threshold and within the grid. It does not manifest as open confrontation, nor does it cross out of the range of displacement the structure permits; it leaks in low-amplitude form inside the grid. For the latent-state remainder on the side of the one over whom power is exercised, T3 named two phenomena in P1 as anchors: drift and misreading.
Drift is the latent state at the behavioral layer. The actions of the one over whom power is exercised slide slowly within the grid, deviating from the direction A points to, yet each step still falls within the permitted options. The structure can absorb this low-amplitude slide; it does not manifest, does not trigger confrontation, and so goes long unnoticed by the one who exercises power. But drift accumulates by L3, and after a time the position the one over whom power is exercised actually occupies has come a considerable distance from the position A set, a distance that never passed through a single open crossing.
Misreading is the latent state at the registration layer. It means that the content of B's registration of the structure deviates from the structure itself, and from what A intended it to become. Here misreading must be distinguished from a superficially similar case. If, through source-displacement (T4), the one who exercises power succeeds in making the one over whom power is exercised believe that power comes from some claimed source, and the latter acts a hundred percent by that claimed logic, that is not misreading; that is the latter completing a co-directional registration (P3) within A's grid, the success of T4, not an expression of B's remainder. True misreading is something else: B's remainder erects a shadow topology inside the grid. B has not stepped out of the larger grid, on the surface still complies, still in the latent state; but B's internal anchor for the structure has already deviated from the safe zone A delimited. An example: A uses the Mandate of Heaven to mask the actual source of power (T4, A's displacement of his own source), while B reads the Mandate of Heaven as the principle that when the ruler is without the Way he may be opposed (misreading, a topological mutation of B's remainder). These two share a root, both being a deviation between registration-content and structure; but they stand apart. T4 is A's displacement of his own source; misreading is the topological mutation of B's remainder beneath an appearance of compliance. The shadow topology is still in the latent state, since it has not yet crossed the threshold, but it is already a seed accumulating by L3.
This accumulation has a physical outlet; it does not stay at the psychological layer. The shadow topology makes B's output always carry a faint deviation; the one who exercises power, or the apparatus that bears it, in order that B's every output continue to fit the grid, must invest ever more verification: disambiguating, issuing denser and longer instructions, configuring stricter review. This rise in verification overhead is the real friction that misreading exacts from the structure, and it is the mechanical channel by which misreading accumulates by L3 and finally feeds into the decay phase M4. Misreading is therefore not a psychological game but the entropy increase of the structure.
The ontological absoluteness in L1 is most evident here. Neither drift nor misreading requires the one over whom power is exercised to feel discomfort or to be prepared to resist. Even where he is subjectively in perfect compliance, without friction, his actions may still be drifting slowly, and his registration of the structure may still carry a shadow topology he himself may not articulate; for ρ ≠ ∅ does not depend on whether he is aware. The latent-state remainder can leak through observable low-amplitude behavior, and the figure of the glance exchanged in silence on the road (P3 §V.4) is its standard form: a leak at the behavioral layer, not some suppressed psychology.
§V The Manifest-State Remainder: Resistance and Backlash
The manifest state is the remainder's expression that has crossed the threshold yet remains within the grid. Crossing the threshold means the expression is no longer quietly absorbed by the structure but manifests and is registered by both sides; remaining within the grid means the relation has not yet come apart, the one over whom power is exercised is still inside this relation. For the manifest-state remainder on his side, T3 named two anchors: resistance and backlash.
Resistance is a reverse vector the one over whom power is exercised outputs. He no longer merely slides slowly but, at the behavioral layer, actively pushes against the direction A points to. Resistance manifests and is registered by A as confrontation, but he is still inside the relation, still within the boundary of the grid. Resistance in this paper means only this reverse vector at the behavioral layer, not any emotional state; it is the structural expression of the remainder after it crosses the threshold, not a psychological description such as the anger of the oppressed.
Backlash is the accumulated remainder discharging at the structure. The remainder accumulated on B's side shows not only as a reverse vector aimed at A; it also acts on the structure itself in the form of raising the cost of maintenance: to keep containing this over-threshold remainder, the structure must invest ever more maintenance, the seam thins accordingly, and brittleness accumulates accordingly. This is the same dynamic as the remainder-rebound spoken of in P1 §8; this paper uses the single word backlash for it. Backlash still occurs within the relation.
Backlash must be distinguished from back-binding. Backlash is T3, the discharge of B's remainder at the structure; back-binding is T6, the compression of A's own remainder that arises because A performs locking (§II). When A performs a downward locking on B, the two rise together: B's grid is narrowed, his remainder swells, and his discharge at the structure grows fiercer (backlash intensifies); A invests continuously to maintain that locking, and his own remainder is compressed the deeper (back-binding deepens). But the two are heterogeneous and on different sides, and cannot swallow each other: backlash is the B-side remainder the structure bears, back-binding is the self-binding A bears, the one landing between the one over whom power is exercised and the structure, the other landing on the one who exercises it himself.
That backlash raises the cost of maintenance is precisely the concrete dynamic of the decay phase M4 (P2 §IV.4) on the remainder side: M4 is driven by the three factors of T3 (the remainder's ineliminability), T5 (the thinning of the seam), and the pressure of dominant-layer migration, and backlash is how the ineliminability factor among them acts on the structure. In a multi-agent network the manifest-state remainder has a further channel of amplification: when a bystander node in the recognition network flips this relation from co-directional registration to counter-directional registration, backlash spreads through the network and reputation collapses accordingly (P3 §VI.3); the manifest state is the visible side of that collapse. The complete mechanism of its network spread is left to P7.
§VI The Boundary-Crossing-State Remainder: Escape and Migration
The boundary-crossing state is the remainder's expression that has crossed the grid boundary. Crossing the boundary means the relation can no longer contain this remainder: either the one over whom power is exercised has left this relation, or the whole power structure has been overtaken by the population it occupies. For the boundary-crossing-state remainder on his side, T3 named two anchors: escape and migration. It should first be said that the word migration here is a mechanical description at the structural level, not a prediction, encouragement, or evaluation of any specific historical event (the series's guard is given in §I).
Escape is an individual crossing out of the grid. P1 §1 already named the space of departure as the remainder of the one over whom power is exercised; escape is the cashing-out of that space of departure. The space of departure always exists structurally, which is necessary, because ρ ≠ ∅; but in most cases it does not actually occur, because the cost of departure may be extremely high (P1 §5). Whether escape is cashed out is settled by cost and circumstance and is empirically contingent; that escape persists as a structural possibility is the necessity of L1.
Migration is a crossing out of the grid at the structural level. It is not that some one over whom power is exercised leaves, but that the whole power structure is overtaken by the population it governs. P1 §7 already named its mechanism: a power structure runs successfully, triggering a rise in the population's DD ratio; the risen population exerts stress on the original structure, and along the severing path this rise appears mainly, and indirectly, through remainder-rebound. Migration sits on this line of remainder-rebound: the accumulated remainder crosses out of the boundary the old grid can contain, and the relation migrates toward a new dominant layer. This paper makes evident the remainder-side engine of the dominant-layer migration thesis; it does not re-establish that thesis itself.
Escape and migration constitute the two scales of the boundary-crossing state, one at the individual and one at the structural level. The two share one modality: the remainder's ineliminability guarantees that the structural possibility of the boundary-crossing state always exists; but when the crossing is cashed out is settled by empirical conditions. The existence of the remainder does not entail the necessary occurrence of escape or migration.
§VII The Remainder on the Side of the One Who Exercises Power, and the Constructive-Layer Remainder
§IV through §VI walked the three states along the side of the one over whom power is exercised. The three states are node-neutral (§III), and the same frame applies equally to the side of the one who exercises power and to the side of the apparatus. The remainder is not the monopoly of the one over whom power is exercised; the one who exercises it and the apparatus that bears the power each have their own remainder, each unfolding by the three states.
The remainder on the side of the one who exercises power comes from the differential between A's unbounded possibility as a 13DD subject and the finite grid of exercise the structure affords (§II). It unfolds by the three states. The latent state is A's possibility deviating slightly within the script of exercise: A wields the power the structure authorizes, but with personal manners and slight deviations the structure never encoded. The manifest state is this remainder crossing the threshold while still within the position of exercise: A's exercise crosses out of the structure's script (off-script exercise), or A makes a visible alteration to the structure itself (modification). The boundary-crossing state is A crossing out of the position of exercise itself: A abandons his own position of exercise, or A's modification grows so large that the old structure is overtaken. These expressions can take unboundedly many forms; abuse, modification, and inaction are only three anchors among them, and all must be read in the structural sense, value-free. Abuse here means an exercise crossing out of the structure's script, not the moral judgment of misuse; modification means rewriting the structure itself; inaction means A staying his hand, since A's possibility itself contains the branch of not exercising, while the structure's script encodes A as one who exercises, so this branch overflows as remainder.
The remainder on the side of the one who exercises power and his back-binding are two things (§II, running in the same direction as the back-binding theorem T6 in P1 §8). The remainder is ever-present, present even without locking, and freely unfolds as the forms above; back-binding arises only when A performs a downward locking and is the compression of this remainder of A's under locking. The deeper A locks, the more his own remainder is compressed, the more his freely-unfolding off-script remainder is suppressed, and the more A is bound into the structure he has locked, at the limit locked into it together with the one over whom power is exercised. Modification must further be distinguished from migration: modification is A actively rewriting the structure, an expression of the remainder on the side of the one who exercises power; migration is the structure being overtaken by stress on the side of the one over whom power is exercised (§VI), not something A does actively. The two run in different directions and cannot be fused.
One vector must be singled out here. A's off-script exercise is A's possibility overflowing, a release of A's remainder; but if the direction of that overflowing action happens to point at fixing the one over whom power is exercised downward, then in one and the same action release and locking coincide. A jailer who on his own initiative intensifies the treatment of a prisoner is at once an exercise crossing out of the script (a release of his own remainder) and a downward locking on the prisoner (a pull of the T6 trigger). In that moment A casts the very freedom he has let overflow into a chain around himself: the remainder he releases is used as a locking action, and the locking action back-binds him by T6. Therefore releasing the remainder is not the same as gaining freedom; when the remainder is used for downward locking, it becomes the fuel of back-binding. The release of the remainder and the accumulation of back-binding are, when not pointed at locking, two things that stand apart (§II); in the moment they point at locking, they occur isomorphically in one and the same action.
The remainder on the side of the apparatus is the constructive-layer remainder (mediator cost), not a subject-remainder (§II). It is not the apparatus feeling or wanting something, but the interface failures, the rising complexity, the maintenance costs, and the brittleness-deposition the construct produces in maintaining its own closure. It too unfolds by the three states: the latent state is low-amplitude seepage of brittleness within the apparatus's tolerance; the manifest state is rising complexity and interface failures manifesting as a visible maintenance burden; the boundary-crossing state is the narrative-bearing capacity collapsing to the point of the apparatus itself dissolving. Though the apparatus, qua construct, has a remainder, it is a borrowing node: it is a power apparatus because there is a set of 13DD key nodes that invoke and administer it; for a locking applied through the apparatus, back-binding lands on this set of key nodes, not on the apparatus (§II). The complete dynamics of the apparatus-layer remainder, including how it walks the line of brittleness-accumulation toward dissolution, are left to P7 (Dissolution), the division of labor having been set in P2 §V.5.
With this the global distribution of the remainder is walked through: on the side of the one over whom power is exercised, on the side of the one who exercises it, and on the side of the apparatus, all three kinds of node carry an undigestible remainder (the two subjects an ontological ρ, the apparatus a constructive-layer remainder), all unfold by the same set of three states, and within each state the concrete expression can take unboundedly many forms. There is no remainder-exempt node in a power relation.
§VIII The Dynamics of the Remainder Across the Various Forms
§IV through §VII cut the remainder by expressive state and node (the three states on the side of the one over whom power is exercised, the side of the one who exercises it, and the side of the apparatus). The remainder can also be cut by P2's forms. P2 §IX.3 handed this paper the concrete dynamics of the remainder across the various forms, and this section makes good on it.
Cutting by expressive state and cutting by form are two independent blades, and they cross. The form does not settle whether the remainder exists (ρ ≠ ∅ holds for all forms); what the form settles is which state the remainder tends to land in. Below, one place is taken from each of P2's three axes, geometric, phase, and dimensional, to show how the form shapes the state of the remainder. What is taken from each of the three axes is only an example, not an exhaustive form-by-state correspondence.
By the geometric axis, covert severing and overt severing differ systematically in the state of the remainder. Covert severing keeps the remainder of the one over whom power is exercised long in the latent state: he misreads the result of severing as natural order or free choice, the remainder leaks in the low-amplitude forms of drift and misreading, and the short-term cost of maintenance is accordingly low. But once the covertness is broken, a large amount of the latent-state remainder accumulated by L3 crosses the threshold in batches and turns manifest: the one over whom power is exercised re-registers the prior severing as illegitimate, and backlash manifests abruptly. This is the remainder-side mechanism of P2 §III.3's point that the covert is no more stable than the overt: what covertness lowers is the short-term cost, what it accumulates is the batch change-of-state at threshold-crossing. Apparatus severing, on top of the remainder on the subject's side, lays a further layer of the apparatus's own constructive-layer remainder (§VII).
By the phase axis, the remainder accumulates across the four phases of establishment, maintenance, transmission, and decay, and the transmission phase is the most worth looking at. Transmission is not simple copying (P2 §IV.3): in transmission across generations and across changes of personnel, the new bearer re-registers the structure by his own DD-position, and the remainder is redistributed in the moment of transmission rather than carried over intact. The decay phase, in turn, is driven by the remainder, the engine of M4 on the remainder side (§V).
By the dimensional axis, the remainder has its forms at 13DD, 14DD, and 15DD, and the perfect-compliance state of algorithmic power is the apex for testing L1. The three-layer severing chain of algorithmic power is highly covert (P2 §VI), and at its deepest the one over whom power is exercised has perfectly internalized the algorithm's steering, without any subjective friction or consciousness of resistance. At this point a direct question arises: if he is psychologically in complete compliance, where does the remainder come from, and does L1 fail here? The answer is that L1 receives here its strongest confirmation, not its failure. The remainder is not his psychological discomfort; it is the ontological-layer topological differential between his unbounded possibility as a 13DD subject and the finite option grid the algorithm provides. This differential does not depend on whether he is aware. Even where he is in perfect compliance, this differential still exists. So long as the apparatus tries to maintain the appearance of perfect compliance, it must continuously expend computation, energy, and maintenance cost to smooth out the slight inconsistencies this differential produces. The accumulation of brittleness on the apparatus side (§VII) is in essence the accumulation of the cost of this maintaining action; when this cost exceeds the threshold the apparatus can bear, the decay phase manifests (M4). Hence the drive of M4 under algorithmic power does not depend on his psychological state but on the persistence of this ontological differential. In the limit case where he is subjectively wholly unaware, ρ ≠ ∅ still holds, and the whole mechanics of the remainder remain intact. This is the one place where L1's ontological absoluteness, L3's accumulation, and the de-psychologizing of the remainder reach their strongest together.
§IX Interfaces with the Series
This paper unfolds, along T3, the remainder's function as a limit; it does not unfold direction, and does not unfold dissolution. Direction and dissolution are left to later papers; the interfaces are given here.
The interface with P5 (Cultivating) and P6 (Severing) lies in direction. The discrimination between severing-mode and cultivating-mode is given not by this paper but by whether the T6 locking action is triggered. The remainder's orientation differs under the two directions: along the severing path, the accumulated remainder builds toward backlash, escape, and migration, acting against the structure; along the cultivating path, the accumulated remainder is taken up into the relation toward the dissolution of the positional difference itself, and P2 §IV.4 records this self-dissolution as the mark of cultivation's success. It must be stressed that the success here is a property of the direction, discriminated by T6, not a property of the remainder itself; the remainder itself remains value-free. The remainder on the side of the one who exercises power likewise forks by direction: under severing, A's remainder is compressed by locking (back-binding), while A's off-script remainder leaks as usual; under cultivation, A does not lock, A's remainder is not compressed, and its orientation is toward releasing the one over whom power is exercised. The complete dual dynamics of both sides are left to P5 and P6.
The case of cultivation's success must, here, hold L1 to the end. When a cultivating power succeeds, the positional difference is dissolved and the relation comes apart; a question follows: does the remainder zero out as well? It does not. The key is that what cultivation does is not reduce the remainder at all, but raise the one over whom power was exercised to a higher DD level, and dissolve the particular grid A imposed within that relation. Two things must be separated. One is that local relational grid: the finite option grid A drew for the one over whom power was exercised within that relation. When cultivation succeeds, A has dissolved this grid; the one over whom power was exercised is no longer confined by this particular grid, and that local relation of confinement thereby loses its definition, rather than some differential being computed down to zero. The other is the absolute ontological ρ: the remainder between his possibility as a 13DD subject and any finite structure, given by L1, with ρ ≠ ∅ holding universally. Cultivation does not cure, does not fill, and does not erase this absolute ontological ρ.
A subject raised to a higher level has a greater total remainder. At the population level this rise has two co-directional destinations. The first is that the overlap of mutual registrability and mutual sustaining grows larger, that is, absolute consensus increases. The second is that the remainder-differences among individuals grow larger. The two run in the same direction, and the difference grows the stronger: the increment of each subject's total remainder is greater than the increment that falls into absolute consensus, and the surplus precipitates as difference. Diversification is therefore not a subtraction from absolute consensus but the surplus left after the total's increment exceeds the consensus's increment, and this surplus is amplified with the rise. Hence even as mutual sustaining keeps deepening, the remainder-differences, far from being absorbed, expand; ρ ≠ ∅ holds at the population level along the direction of the rise just as round-the-clock, and the more strongly so. Cultivation moves the DD level; what it dissolves is the local grid that imprisoned the remainder; the remainder itself, as the subject rises to a higher level, continues to exist, and at the population level even grows rather than diminishes. What is dissolved is only the local grid of imprisonment, not the remainder. The deepened sense of the cannot-but toward others, and the will to cultivate, that a risen subject comes to display are the directional dynamics of cultivating power, whose complete unfolding is left to P5 (Cultivating).
The interface with P7 (Dissolution) lies in dissolution. The complete dynamics of the apparatus-layer remainder, namely how the constructive-layer remainder walks the line of brittleness-accumulation toward the apparatus's dissolution, are left to P7 (P2 §V.5). The remainder-side engine of the decay phase (§V), together with the spread of manifest-state backlash through the recognition network (P3 §VI.3's flip of bystander recognition), provide together the remainder-side basis for P7's resistance and dissolution.
The interface with M4 lies in decay. This paper takes up the remainder side of M4, namely the concrete dynamics of the T3-ineliminability factor; the other two factors of M4, the thinning of the seam (T5) and the pressure of dominant-layer migration, are not re-unfolded here. The dominant-layer migration thesis has its remainder-side engine made evident in §VI, likewise without re-establishment.
§X Conclusion
This paper unfolds, along T3 (the power-remainder theorem), the complete dynamics of the remainder within the domain of power, introducing no new T-theorem. The conceptual machinery established in P1 receives, along the dimension of the remainder, its full unfolding.
The results of this paper can be gathered into four. First, the remainder is the ontological-layer topological differential between a 13DD subject's unbounded possibility and the finite option grid it occupies; ρ ≠ ∅ holds universally, symmetric across any subject in the relation, independent of subjective awareness (L1). Second, the remainder's expression, by its amplitude relative to a structure's absorption threshold and grid boundary, takes the latent, manifest, and boundary-crossing states; the three states are a structural frame of expressive amplitude, a single remainder-expression lands in one and only one state, and within each state the modes of unfolding are unbounded (L2). Third, remainder accumulation is monotonically irreversible, that is, the remainder cannot be zeroed and cannot be losslessly absorbed by power, rather than each expression only increasing in magnitude; this accumulation is the remainder-side engine of the decay phase (L3). Fourth, remainder and back-binding belong to two sides: the remainder is the undigestible residue of both subjects in the relation and of any construct, while back-binding is the compression of A's own remainder due to locking; for a locking applied through an apparatus, back-binding lands on the set of key nodes that invoke and administer the apparatus, and the apparatus does not bear back-binding (L4).
From this, the remainder is the structural limit of power, and this limit is global. On the side of the one over whom power is exercised, on the side of the one who exercises it, and on the side of the apparatus, all three kinds of node carry an undigestible remainder, and there is no remainder-exempt position in a power relation. The limit of power comes not from an external constraint, not from the psychological discontent of the one over whom power is exercised, not from moral sanction; it comes from the ineliminable remainder at every node internal to the power relation.
The remainder is value-free, and its modes of expression are unbounded. The discrimination between severing-mode and cultivating-mode is given not by this paper but by whether the T6 locking action is triggered. The complete dynamics of severing power are left to P6 (Severing), the complete dynamics of cultivating power to P5 (Cultivating), and resistance and dissolution to P7 (Dissolution). This paper's work is complete; P5 (Cultivating) takes up the directional dynamics of cultivating power.
